Kwikset Lock Rekeying Nationwide

Kwikset Lock Rekeying: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Kwikset lock rekeying in Houston typically runs $89-$149 per lock when done on-site, and we carry the full pin kit and compatible keyways on every truck. Most single-family jobs in Houston take 20-40 minutes, and we can usually be there same day. You’ll know it’s time when your key starts catching in the cylinder, you’ve lost track of who has copies, or you just bought a home in Spring Branch or the Heights and the previous owner handed you a ring of mystery keys.

Which Kwikset Models This Applies To

Kwikset has sold more residential locks in the U.S. than any other brand, and that ubiquity means we see the same dozen series across Houston homes every week. The SmartKey series (identified by the small slot next to the keyhole) rekeys differently than traditional pin-tumbler Kwikset cylinders, and mixing up the two wastes a trip. Traditional Kwikset models - the 660 deadbolt, 400T entry knob, 200S passage set, and the older Titan series still common in 1990s-built homes in Memorial and Braeswood - use standard .115-inch diameter top pins and .003-inch increment master pin kits. SmartKey cylinders use a sidebar and wafer system that requires a different tool set entirely.

We stock both on the truck. OEM Kwikset key blanks and pins are what we reach for first, but for older discontinued series, we carry quality aftermarket equivalents that meet the same ANSI/BHMA specs. The gotcha in Houston’s humidity: off-brand pins without proper nickel plating can corrode inside the cylinder in two to three years, binding the works. We learned that the hard way on a rekey job in Clear Lake back in 2019 and stopped using unplated pins that same month.

Signs Your Kwikset Lock Rekeying Is Failing

  • Key sticks or requires jiggling to turn. Worn pins no longer align cleanly at the shear line, and Houston’s airborne Gulf moisture accelerates the microscopic corrosion that makes this worse. The cylinder isn’t shot yet, but it’s telling you the tolerances are gone.
  • Different keys seem to work, or one key works in multiple locks it shouldn’t. This means master pins have shifted or been installed incorrectly, creating accidental cross-keying. It happens when a handyman rekeys without a proper pinning chart.
  • Key turns but the bolt doesn’t retract. The tailpiece or cam has slipped out of alignment with the cylinder plug. On Kwikset deadbolts, the tailpiece slot can wallow out after fifteen years of use, common in original hardware in Sharpstown and Westbury homes built in the 1980s.
  • SmartKey cylinder won’t accept the reset tool. The internal sidebar has jammed, usually because someone forced a wrong key and bent the wafers. SmartKey is convenient when it works, but the mechanism has less forgiveness for rough handling than traditional pin tumblers.
  • You’ve rekeyed before and the new keys already feel loose. The cylinder plug bore has worn oversize from years of brass keys wearing against softer brass components. At that point, rekeying buys you months, not years, and we will tell you so before we start.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Our flat price for Kwikset rekeying in Houston is $89 for the first lock and $35 for each additional lock on the same visit. That covers disassembly, pin replacement with plated brass or nickel-silver pins, two new keys per cylinder, and lubrication with Houdini Lock Lube (the only thing we use in Houston’s humidity). If a cylinder is damaged and needs replacement, a new Kwikset SmartKey or traditional cylinder runs $45-$75 installed, and we will show you the old part before we swap it.

Every rekey job carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise. If a key binds or a cylinder fails inside that window, we come back and make it right. No paperwork to dig up, no argument. We quote it flat before the truck rolls, and we put it in writing when the job is done.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner with patience and a Kwikset rekeying kit from the hardware store can handle a single traditional cylinder on a kitchen table. You will need the current working key, the new key, the right pin kit, a plug follower to keep the top pins from launching, and decent lighting. What goes wrong: the plug follower slips, springs scatter across the tile, or you install a pin one size off and don’t discover it until the key won’t withdraw. We have been called to homes in River Oaks and Gulfton alike to fish springs out of air vents.

SmartKey cylinders are not designed for user service. The internal components are under spring pressure, and without the factory reset cradle, you risk jamming the mechanism permanently. If your home has SmartKey locks and you need them rekeyed, that’s a truck call. We are not affiliated with Kwikset, but we have rekeyed thousands of their locks in Houston, and we know where the tolerances hide.

FAQs

How long do rekeyed Kwikset locks last in Houston?

In normal residential use, a properly rekeyed Kwikset cylinder lasts 10-15 years. Houston’s Gulf humidity and salt air within fifteen miles of the coast can shorten that by a third if the cylinder was never lubricated. We treat every rekey with anti-corrosion lubricant and recommend a quick spray every two years. Call (833) 695-3962 to schedule - estimates are free.

Can a failing Kwikset lock be repaired instead of rekeyed?

Sometimes. A sticky cylinder can often be cleaned and repinned. But if the plug bore is worn, the cam is cracked, or a SmartKey mechanism is jammed, repair is temporary at best. We will show you the wear and give you a straight answer on whether rekeying is worth it. Call (833) 695-3962 and we will talk it through.

How long does a Kwikset rekey take on-site?

Most single locks take 15-20 minutes. A full house rekey - four locks, typical for a Houston single-story - runs 45 minutes to an hour. We work on the door, so nothing comes back to the shop. Same-day appointments are usually available. Call (833) 695-3962 to check today’s schedule.

Do you stock Kwikset rekeying parts on the truck?

Yes. Every Strongbox truck carries Kwikset pin kits in all standard increments, SmartKey reset cradles, replacement cylinders, and key blanks. If you have an older Titan or discontinued series, we likely have the aftermarket equivalent. We do not make a second trip for parts. Call (833) 695-3962 - we will confirm your series over the phone and bring what fits.
