Sargent Lock Rekeying Nationwide

Sargent Lock Rekeying: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Sargent lock rekeying in Houston typically runs $85-$175 per cylinder when done on-site, and we carry the full pin kit for Sargent 10-Line, 6300, and 8200 series in every service van. Most residential rekeys in Houston Heights, Memorial, or the Galleria area are finished in 20-30 minutes. We stock Sargent key-in-knob and mortise cylinders on the truck, so same-day service is standard - not an upcharge.

Most Houston homeowners discover they need a Sargent rekey after a closing, a tenant turnover, a lost key, or when the key starts sticking in the cylinder during our humid spring months. Sometimes it’s a locksmith who points out the cylinder was master-keyed three owners ago and nobody knows who holds the sub-keys. Either way, rekeying resets the combination to a single, known key - no hardware replacement needed.

Which Sargent Models This Applies To

Sargent’s residential and light commercial lines have distinct cylinder architectures, and the rekeying approach differs for each. We work with the 10-Line standard duty (key-in-knob and deadbolt cylinders), the 6300 series heavy-duty mortise locks common in Houston’s 1960s-1980s brick ranch homes, and the 8200 series office function mortise bodies found in older commercial buildings along Richmond and Westheimer corridors.

To identify your series: remove the interior trim and look for a stamped model number on the lock body edge, or check the original key bow for “SARGENT” and a series indicator. The 10-Line uses a standard .115″ diameter plug; 6300 and 8200 mortise cylinders are 1-1/8″ or 1-3/8″ threaded shells that seat into the lock body with a cam tailpiece. Mix these up and you waste a trip. We carry OEM Sargent pinning kits and factory-original key blanks, plus quality aftermarket cylinders from Falcon and Corbin Russwin where the application allows. For master-keyed systems or institutions requiring key control, we stick with Sargent factory pinning - the tolerances matter.

One Houston-specific gotcha: many Tanglewood and River Oaks homes have Sargent hardware installed during original construction in the 1970s-1990s. Some of these cylinders use the old Sargent “L” keyway, discontinued in favor of the “R” keyway. We stock both, but the L keyway blanks are getting harder to source - worth knowing before you commit to keeping the original cylinder.

Signs Your Sargent Lock Rekeying Is Failing

  • Key sticks or catches at certain positions. In Houston’s Gulf Coast humidity, pin chambers accumulate airborne salt and pollen that gum up the precision-machined Sargent pin stacks. A rekey with fresh pins and chamber lubrication restores smooth operation - the old pins may have micro-corrosion you cannot see.
  • Key works in some locks but not others on the same property. This usually means a master-keyed system with sub-master levels you have lost track of. One Houston client in Braeswood Place had four generations of master keys floating around from previous property managers. Rekeying to a single-level system eliminated the mystery.
  • Key turns but bolt does not retract fully. The cylinder cam and tailpiece alignment is correct, but worn driver springs or mushroom pins from an old master system create binding. Rekeying replaces the pin stack and springs, which solves it - unless the bolt mechanism itself is worn, which we check before we quote.
  • You have no idea how many copies exist. This is not a mechanical failure, but it is the most common reason Houston homeowners call. After a closing, a divorce, or a caregiver departure, rekeying is the only way to know exactly who has access. We issue two new keys per cylinder standard; additional copies cut while we’re on-site.
  • Key requires jiggling or specific angle to work. Worn pins have lost their factory bevels, or the plug has developed slop in the cylinder housing. Sargent’s tolerances are tighter than Kwikset or Defiant, so wear shows up as finicky operation before complete failure. Rekeying early prevents the emergency call.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Our flat pricing for Sargent rekeying in Houston:

Service Price Range
Single cylinder rekey (key-in-knob or deadbolt) $85-$125
Mortise cylinder rekey (6300/8200 series) $110-$175
Master key system rekey (per cylinder, 3+ cylinders) $75-$95 each
Additional keys cut on-site $4-$8 each

What drives the range: mortise cylinders take longer to remove and reinstall, especially in older Houston homes where the door prep has settled or been modified. Master-keyed systems require more complex pinning charts and verification. Every rekey includes new bottom pins, driver pins, springs, cylinder lubrication, and two new keys. We quote flat before the truck rolls - the price on the phone matches the invoice. Our 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the work in writing: if the key does not operate smoothly, we return and make it right, no paperwork required.

Seniors and veterans receive our standing 5% discount. If your total repair exceeds $250, ask about our $50-off offer when you call.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely check two things: whether the key is Sargent-original (look for the name stamped on the bow) and whether the problem is isolated to one cylinder or systemic. Beyond that, rekeying requires a pinning kit with Sargent-specific pin diameters, a plug follower to prevent top pins from scattering into the lock body, and the skill to read a pinning chart. We have seen DIY attempts in Spring Branch and Oak Forest where the plug came out without a follower, dumping fifteen tiny parts into the door cavity. The cylinder was salvageable; the door was not worth the labor to fish parts out.

Sargent cylinders use precision tolerances - a pin 0.003″ too long will cause binding you cannot diagnose without depth keys. We carry those keys. We also carry replacement cylinders if yours is damaged during disassembly. For the cost difference between a DIY kit you’ll use once and our flat-rate service, most Houston homeowners find it simpler to have us handle it. Call (833) 695-3962 and we’ll quote it flat before the truck rolls, and we put it in writing when the job is done.
