Signs Your Sargent Car Key Cutting Is Failing

• The key sticks or catches halfway into the lock. Worn key edges or bent wafers inside the cylinder create friction that wasn’t there before. In Houston’s humidity, dust and pollen also pack into the keyway and make a marginal fit worse.

There’s no physical danger in key cutting the way there is with high-tension garage door springs or electrical panels, but there are ways to waste money fast. You can buy a blank online and find a hardware store with a duplicator, but Sargent keyways are precision-milled and most big-box machines cut to tolerances too loose for automotive wafers. A “close enough” key works until it doesn’t - usually at the worst moment.

What you can safely check: try your spare key and note if the problem follows the key or stays with the lock. If the spare works smoothly, you need a key, not a cylinder.
